Logo Draft

For my logo project, I decided to go with a figure widely recognized within the film community, which is a slate. Not only do people who are in the film community know what the slate is, but the most of the public generally recognizes what it represents. As I am using this logo to represent myself as an actor, I decided that the slate would be a good way to translate that. I also used the idea of a slate in my last project, so I figured it would be a good way to connect the logo to the design project.

I created the image mainly using the pen tool and the line segment tool. I used the pen tool to create the rectangular base of the slate, and the line segment tool to form the lines on the clapper portion. I then filled in the black color lines and used the text tool to add my name. I found that many of the directions from the Pencil Logo tutorial were useful in crafting my logo because the logos were of similar structure. I also used help from the Banner Logo tutorial to assist in copying and flipping the images of the clapper. For the most part, it was easy to construct this image. The only issue that occurred was when I was attempting to fill in the lines of the clapper. I could not find any sort of fill tool, so I ended up using the Blob Brush Tool and painting in the lines manually.

I believe my logo does have a good sense of balance. Although it is not symmetrical, the simplicity of the shapes and connectedness of the logo allows for balance to be present. One of the things I do have concern with in this piece is if the idea of “actor” will translate to the viewer. I don’t know if this logo is more suited for someone who works behind the scenes in film, as it may suggest.

Final Design Project

For the final draft of my design project, I decided to simplify the image, but at the same time add another layer to it from my previous draft. I have used all of the same images from my first draft, but have instead put them in a different order layer-wise. I moved the image of the hand and the clapper to the foreground, while the script remains the only image in the background. This tweaks the meaning of the image a bit, as it suggests that the actors in the photo are shooting a scene. One of the reasons for this change was because a few of the comments I received from my classmates mentioned that the background seemed too cluttered.

I also have added a layer behind the image of the actors, which is just a copy of the same image but with an added black and white color effect. I decided to do this because I wanted to fill up more of the space on the image and create depth.

For my final change of the image, I have changed the font of the text. I changed the font to the one that is traditionally used in scripts, which is Courier New.

I think this image is much more united than the previous one. I wanted to convey a depiction of myself in my element doing what I love, which is acting. I believe I have achieved that with this photo.

Design Project Draft

For this assignment, it was much more complicated for me to do than I had initially anticipated. I had a relatively easy time with the tutorials, so I figured that I would be easy to apply that recent knowledge to the draft. I was incorrect. There were some aspects that were simple, such as layering the photos together, and changing the opacity for each photo. Other parts required much more effort, such as cutting the top image and making sure it was as precise as possible. I even had to start over at one point because I did not know how to reverse one of the actions I performed and because the concept for my project changed.

When I look at the image, it’s certainly a start, but I definitely think I can greatly improve upon it. I have almost zero Photoshop experience, so I’m just glad I was able to produce something! In critiquing the image, I would say that the things that bother me most about it are the text and the image on top. Both of these things seem like they don’t belong in the picture. I wish there was a way in which I could make it look like they were more involved with the background, rather than just sitting on top. The design theory that I think this image lacks would be unity. It is not united and does not exhibit a sense of cohesiveness yet.

However, there are things that I do appreciate about this particular work. That mainly has to do with the background of the image. I like that I was able to use an effect of layering to make it look as though the script and the clapper image are united as one. I also like the overall theme of the image. It is very simple, yet is able to convey the message of film.

Image Collection

For my project, I plan to create a header for my page that includes some of the projects that I have been in previously, as well as images relating to my craft as an actor.

Character Building

When it came to my attention that we would choose a semester topic for COM 210 focusing on something that had a special meaning to us, it took me approximately .5 seconds to decide what my topic would be. It is a passion that has stayed strong with me since elementary school. My topic will be on my love of acting and performance. I decided to focus on this because acting is an art form that I do not see myself losing interest in anytime soon. I love the concept of being able to transform into another being, and being placed into a setting that is foreign to the daily life that I am familiar with. I love the collaborate process of performance, getting to team up with others who have a similar enthusiasm for the craft.

Throughout the course of the semester, I will be collecting original materials, including audio, video, and photographs. For me, I believe this will be an easy task. Throughout my years of being on stage and in front of the camera, I have been fortunate enough to collect an archive of items from my past projects. I am also in a current production, from which I will be able to obtain photos from my performances.

Two of the units from this semester that I am particularly excited about doing are Unit 2 and Unit 4. For Unit 2, in which we will use Adobe Illustrator to create some type of logo relating to our topic, I will certainly use this as an opportunity to create a personal logo that includes my name that will represent my acting portfolio. For Unit 4, we will learn about Adobe Premiere and different video production strategies. For this unit, it will be my goal to compile a bunch of my performance videos, and include them in one video that I will add addition content to.

  1. Theatre Puget Sound – TPS is a website that I frequently visit, specifically for audition listings. They are a reliable source that, I, as an actor living in the Northwest, can count on.
  2. Variety: Actors on Actors – This is a recent series that I recently discovered on YouTube from Variety Magazine. It is called “Actors on Actors” and each episode features two high-profile or upcoming actors interviewing each other about their notable projects. This specific one is the first I watched, and features Daniel Kaluuya and Timothee Chalamet.
  3. Backstage – Backstage is another website that I use often as a resource. They provide helpful articles for actors, as well as audition listings.

I am very excited to get started working on these projects, and it is my hope to use my creations towards my professional interests.
